Opening of the 5th Edition of Tetouan's Summer Cultural Week

A week of art, tradition, and celebration of Tetouan's rich cultural heritage

Tetouan – The 5th edition of Tetouan’s Summer Cultural Week kicked off on Monday at the Space for the Historical Memory of Resistance and Liberation, in the presence of a host of intellectuals, artists, cultural figures, and art and culture enthusiasts.

This event, organized at the initiative of the Tétouan Asmir Association and the Zoubida Afilal Association, aims to highlight the tangible and intangible heritage of Tetouan’s old medina, as well as the unique artistic and cultural expressions of the White Dove city.

The opening ceremony, held in celebration of Throne Day, featured the launch of a collective art exhibition by Riad Bouhlal, Souad Foukai, Jawad Dfouf, Nisrine Bamkhout, and Bassma Koulou. It also included the inauguration of a fair showcasing local artisanal products such as sewing and embroidery, Tetouani Zellige, jewelry, and cosmetic products.

The ceremony also paid heartfelt tribute to the community activist Aicha Benjelloun, in recognition of her efforts in preserving and promoting Tetouan’s authentic traditions and heritage.

Several exhibitors emphasized, in statements to MAP, that the event provides an opportunity to spotlight Tetouan’s rich material and immaterial heritage and to support the city’s growing tourism during the summer season. They invited residents and visitors to explore unique creations crafted with finesse and elegance by Tetouani artists.

The cultural week, which also marks the 30th anniversary of the Tétouan Asmir Association, features a variety of activities, including a fashion show showcasing Tetouani caftans from past and present, musical evenings with the all-female Hadra group led by artist Rabia El Madani, and performances by the traditional Taktouka Jabalia troupe.

Running until July 12, the event will also include the screening of a documentary on Tetouani traditions and the presentation of publications by the Tétouan Asmir Association, the M’hammed Benaboud Foundation, and the Moroccan Association for Andalusian Studies. The program will also celebrate the local clothing heritage, including the iconic Cheda Tétouanaise.
